For Siena

Veronik on Apr 21st 2008

While I was In Toronto last week, I made a new friend who has a keen interest in cats. Unfortunately, the only photograph I could find on my computer was a blurry shot of Fly.

I like to call them my little old ladies even though I don’t think they look it: Nin is 14 years old while Fly is 12. Nin is the nicest cat I’ve ever met but she is a glutton - I adopted her from a rescue shelter as a kitten and was told she’d been abandoned in a forest. She remains convinced that every meal is her last, and will attempts to steal Fly’s food at every turn (we like to hum the theme from the pink panther when she stages an attempt, though the music from the great escape would probably be a better match).

We originally named Fly after the sheepdog in the movie Babe, and it turned out to be auspicious: she goes through phases where she shepherds yarn balls. She never tosses them around or tangles them - she just brings them upstairs (meowing very loudly at the same time) and leaves them at the living room’s threshold. She does this every night at the same time for a few weeks or months, then stops only to begin again several weeks later.

So, those are my cats. It was lovely to meet you and your brother and I hope you enjoyed the photographs.

Oh, so pretty. Fly looks like my Mu’tass- only without the white moustache.

Thos are such regal looking cats! I thinkt hat’s incredible, that Fly shepards yarn balls through the house… I wonder why she does that. Great photographs!

They are so pretty - and one of my cats does exactly the same thing only at 2am - meow meow look mom I brought you some yarn!

Such cuties! I love the story about Nin and her attempts to steal food. My first (and only) cat was the same way.

Our cat does a similar thing, except not with yarn, but with a pink-maribou trimmed child’s dress up purse. She will yowl until you wake up and acknowledge her.
We were told that it was the equivalent of a mother cat teaching its kittens to hunt by bringing them already captured prey. She had had kittens before we got her, so I guess now we’re the eternal substitutes?

I like these pictures of your furry friends. I like the halo effect on the top picture. I miss my cat, Spanky, who we had to put down last year. She was 19 years old and her kidneys had failed. She was healthy up until then.

    Thanks for sharing.

I’ve just happened onto your blog for the first time today and I was surprised to see how many of your designs are ones that have appealled to me or that I have been considering making! (I never pay attention to the name of the designer when I’m looking at patterns - maybe I should start!)

I had cats for years, 16 at one point counting babies, but allergies keep me from having them now. I really miss them. They’re sort of like kids. They let you hug on them at their discretion, but if they’re in a MOOD, you can just forget it. Also, I just bought Classic Knits and have several designs on my “to knit” list.
