Contest

Veronik on May 21st 2008

I know, I know: I’ve totally been neglecting this blog. You know the story, so I won’t be repeating it again.

Anyhow. When I was in Toronto last month, I noticed that a lot of knitters expressed interest in the yarn used for the Obi scarf in KCS. And no wonder - Mountain Goat (from Mountain Colors) is indeed fabulous, but rarely seen in Canada. I decided eye candy shots were in order and to take close ups for ravelry while I was it.

For some odd reason, this yarn was particularly difficult to photograph - the color balance was always off. What is in real life a pleasing cool red turned dayglo in the photographs. I wonder if the mohair is to blame…

Consider this the start of a series. To kick things off, let’s have a little giveaway: leave me a comment if you’d like to receive two skeins of Mountain Goat in the ‘Brick’ colorway. I’ll pick a winner on Monday, June 2nd.

Good luck!

Red is my favorite color. And the first picture is just the right shade :) Beautiful scarf.
Please count me in for the draw.

Ooh, lovely yarn! Count me in, please.

  3. Mandy May 21st 2008 at 12:21 pm 3

  7. Britt May 21st 2008 at 12:33 pm 7

series? series about scarves? series of contests? series of delicious yarns? I anticipate good things to come in this series!

  8. Jen May 21st 2008 at 12:34 pm 8

Oooh, count me in on the drawing. Love that scarf pattern as well!

[is it typical, or is it somehow karmic that my anti-spam word was “socks”?] :-)

  9. Veronik May 21st 2008 at 12:41 pm 9

Oh, I meant a series of yarn spotlight posts/project close up shots; there won’t be a give away with each, but every once in a while I’ll have yarn to give away.

The anti-spam word is deliberate: it’s a wordpress plug-in called Peter’s custom anti-spam which can be found here:
    http://www.theblog.ca/anti-spam

  10. Patricia May 21st 2008 at 12:42 pm 10

so pretty - count me in as well!

  11. Lisbeth May 21st 2008 at 12:42 pm 11

  12. jen May 21st 2008 at 12:51 pm 12

    Hi Veronik,
I saw you speak at the Downtown Knit Collective meeting in Toronto, with all the beautiful knits your brought. I JUST finished my first sale pattern, a sock pattern, and am so happy and prooud I could bust! But I’m still broke, so enter me into your contest! Happy knitting always,
    Jen (jenniferocious on Ravelry)

  13. KT May 21st 2008 at 12:52 pm 13

Oh, I love that cabled scarf. Pick me!

  14. Stacey May 21st 2008 at 12:54 pm 14

That is a beautiful scarf! I love the colour & the cable!

Oh & count me in too :D

  15. Amanda May 21st 2008 at 12:56 pm 15

Oooh, count me in! That color is lovely — I can see how it would be difficult to photograph.

  16. Kim U May 21st 2008 at 12:59 pm 16

I love that scarf in the red color, it’s really beautiful.

  17. Jamie May 21st 2008 at 12:59 pm 17

I love Mountain Colors yarns. I used one of their wools for a shawl and have gotten more compliments on that garment than almost anything else I’ve made. The colorways are subtle and deep, and the yarn is a joy to knit. Of course, I’m usually too broke to buy it, but it’s totally worth it.

  18. Ada May 21st 2008 at 01:00 pm 18

Delurking to say, Veronik, your work is outstanding!

  19. jane May 21st 2008 at 01:04 pm 19

    I’ll sign up!

  20. Christine May 21st 2008 at 01:06 pm 20

    Hello Véronik,
beautiful scarf. And I even have the book at home! Where can one get this yarn in Canada? does a Montreal LYS carry it?
Thanks for having me told the address of the knitters meeting about a month ago (Cafeo on St-Denis). Sorry I was so frantic but I had been staying at the office for 2 hours after end of work and really, really wanted to meet the knitters. It was fabulous.

And, yes, I’d like to enter the draw (although I never win).

  21. Laura May 21st 2008 at 01:06 pm 21

I’m so glad to see you online again. Please sign me up for the contest.

  22. Tiffany May 21st 2008 at 01:09 pm 22

    Truly beautiful!

  23. JoezGal May 21st 2008 at 01:12 pm 23

I absolutely love your scarf; the color alone should keep you nice and toasty! It would be a dream come true to win two skeins of that gorgeous yarn and since I already own a copy of KCS, I’d know just what to make with it. : )

  24. Jasmine May 21st 2008 at 01:16 pm 24

The scarf and color is beautiful. I would love to make the scarf out of the yarn. I’ll love to get my hands on some of that yarn :-)

  25. Beth May 21st 2008 at 01:17 pm 25

    Lovely! Count me in.

  26. Amy May 21st 2008 at 01:20 pm 26

Oh my god. I would give my metaphorical left nut for that yarn.

  27. ashley May 21st 2008 at 01:40 pm 27

Love contests! And love that color.
    beautiful!

  28. Lori in Michigan May 21st 2008 at 01:44 pm 28

Love your designs and I’ve been eyeing that scarf pattern !
LOVE the brick color! Pick me! *grin*

  29. Mel May 21st 2008 at 01:45 pm 29

I like that scarf pattern! It’s almost feather-and-fan-ish, but not quite. Nice and wavy for when you get it wet in the rain and dont care about reblocking it. :)

  30. Mel May 21st 2008 at 01:46 pm 30

OK, duh. I thought I was seeing feather and fan. No dice!! Let me backtrack a bit… “it is nice and cabled.” I also love the red. I own so much red stuff! It’s a great color for Seattle winters…

  31. Dao May 21st 2008 at 01:50 pm 31

I think if you have just one very saturated color in front of the digital camera, the sensor tend to want to fix the white balance! When I photography shinny or fuzzy yarn I always have a color swatch in the frame so the camera sensor can reference it. Then i crop it out of the picture when i upload it.

Crossing my figure and hope i win!!

  32. Josiane May 21st 2008 at 01:57 pm 32

The scarf is lovely! I love that the cable is reversible, so that the scarf looks great on both sides.

  33. Elizabeth May 21st 2008 at 02:05 pm 33

Oh, what pretty colors! I think I’m going to have to investigate this yarn.

  34. reluctantmango May 21st 2008 at 02:08 pm 34

I know a thing or two about neglecting the blog :) My excuse is 5 months old and almost as squooshy as your beautiful scarf! The yarn is fantastic - I love the depth of color.

  35. Wendelene May 21st 2008 at 02:08 pm 35

I’m always up for more yarn! And that stuff looks gorgeous!

  36. jessie May 21st 2008 at 02:09 pm 36

    What a lovely scarf!

  37. Kitty Kitty May 21st 2008 at 02:13 pm 37

You know you really have to wonder why red is so hard to photograph well.

Please count me in as well. And thank you for doing the give away.

  38. julie May 21st 2008 at 02:16 pm 38

Oooh that is lovely! My blogging has been sporadic therefore I didn’t even link it. Yarn looks great, I really like the color.

  39. Marnie May 21st 2008 at 02:19 pm 39

I don’t know if this helps, but in Photoshop, if you go to the curves [CMND/CTRL+M] and drop the red curve down a little in the middle and possibly bump the blue up, just a hair ([cmnd/ctrl+1] and [cmnd/ctrl+3] respectively, and then click in the middle of the curve and pull up or down a little and see what happens) I can usually fight that tendency for reds to go all wonky. Also, I’d love to be in the contest :)

  40. Yvonne May 21st 2008 at 02:36 pm 40

I love that scarf pattern and can only dream of what it would feel like to wear. Mountain Colors are unavailable here in the UK

  41. Emma May 21st 2008 at 02:44 pm 41

Who wouldn’t want to be counted in on that giveaway? Not me!

  42. Wendy May 21st 2008 at 03:05 pm 42

Beautiful yarn from one of my favorite knitters, yes, please!

  43. Bullwinkle May 21st 2008 at 03:20 pm 43

You can count on a beautiful yarn give-away to bring all the lurkers out of hiding ;)

    Lovely color. Really.

  44. Peg May 21st 2008 at 03:21 pm 44

Count me in, please! You know you are writing to a Canadian blog when the password shown is ‘tuque’! Not the real spelling, but close enough! I have never knit with that yarn, so I would love to try it.

  45. Kathleen May 21st 2008 at 03:27 pm 45

Oh, count me in, please! Beautiful yarn, both the contest reward and the scarf. And I completely understand about blog neglect.

  46. Laura May 21st 2008 at 03:31 pm 46

pick me! pick me! June 3rd is my birthday. :)

I love the scarf. I think I have yarn in that same colorway, but I haven’t knit it yet. It’s beautiful.

  47. melissa May 21st 2008 at 03:36 pm 47

ooh, yes please! i’ve been wanting to try that yarn, and those colors are right up my street. :)

  48. CindyCindy May 21st 2008 at 03:38 pm 48

I suppose it would be tacky to just say: mememememe! please?

  49. Elli May 21st 2008 at 03:38 pm 49

Oh good grief! Would I ever love to win that delicious looking yarn. And you aren’t going to make us jump through any hoops? How lovely and nice are you?

  53. Naomi May 21st 2008 at 03:46 pm 53

    Count me in, too!

KCS has been a delight to paw over. I just picked out some Rowan 4 ply soft to cast on for the Layered Skater’s Top (undertop). Can’t wait!

  54. Kelly BRzozowski May 21st 2008 at 03:47 pm 54

That scarf is just beautiful, but the color of those two skeins is amazing :) Count me in!

Oh! I love the color and the scarf!! I’d love to try the yarn!

  59. Joanna May 21st 2008 at 04:03 pm 59

Oh my, that is too lovely to pass by. And your scarf pattern is as beautiful as the yarn! Believe it or not, I don’t have a single red shaded yarn in my stash. Talk about an oversight on my part!

  60. jordi May 21st 2008 at 04:06 pm 60

I am in love with that brick-y color of red. Odd, that there are a few colors that not many people dye, and that is one of them, and I have never knitted with Mountain Goat!

  61. Marlyn May 21st 2008 at 04:14 pm 61

    Oh, please, pick me?

  62. Marlyn May 21st 2008 at 04:18 pm 62

I love the anti-spam blocker. I just may have to switch my blog to wordpress.

  63. Jessi May 21st 2008 at 04:22 pm 63

Oh, love the brick - just the right shade of orange-y, brown. The red is a bit bright for me - but that just might be the pictures…

  64. Jennifer May 21st 2008 at 04:42 pm 64

Oh my - you are too generous. Of course I’d LOVE to have the gorgeous yarn. Thanks for having such a great contest. The scarf is absolutely lovely. I can’t imagine what the true colors look like because the picture on my monitor is dazzling.

  65. k. May 21st 2008 at 04:48 pm 65

ah mountain colors…their yarns are soooo smooshy!!! Count me in!

  66. Tina May 21st 2008 at 04:52 pm 66

Who wouldn’t want to win that gorgeous yarn! That scarf is one of my favourites from your book - it would be great to be able to knit it in that colourway too.

  67. Nik May 21st 2008 at 04:57 pm 67

I would love that yarn. You know, you COULD simply give it to me without having to go through all the fuss of having a contest ;D

  68. connie May 21st 2008 at 05:01 pm 68

Hell, yeah, I’d like that yarn ;)

  69. Tara May 21st 2008 at 05:01 pm 69

  70. chrispy May 21st 2008 at 05:07 pm 70

I just recently fell in love with Mountain Colors especially their reds. Please let me have a chance to use a new yarn.

  71. Ina May 21st 2008 at 05:10 pm 71

I love the cables and scallops on the scarf - pretty, but not fussy. And I’d love to try Mountain Goat! Thanks for a great contest.

  72. Mary May 21st 2008 at 05:19 pm 72

Oooooh that stuff is just so my colour! Pick me PLEASE! ;) Can’t wait to see all your projects that you’re working on!

    Lovely!

  74. Sasha May 21st 2008 at 05:45 pm 74

Oh my goodness, what a generous offer!! If Mountain Goat is hard to find in Canada - it’s ever harder here Down Under in Oz! I promise I’ll be a very good shephard to the two little goats! hehe!! Lovely scarf - it’s always such a bummer when you can’t capture just the right colour!

  75. Heather May 21st 2008 at 06:06 pm 75

Beautiful yarn, please count me in. I tried to photograph a cranberry red sweater and every picture regardless of light came out pink. Frustrating!

  76. Clumsy Knitter May 21st 2008 at 06:26 pm 76

Wow! Count me in for that lovely yarn! :)

  77. lisa May 21st 2008 at 06:47 pm 77

  81. Robyn May 21st 2008 at 07:23 pm 81

    That red is gorgeous Veronik!

Hope all is well with you!

Count me in for a contest, why not!!

  82. Elinor May 21st 2008 at 07:25 pm 82

I find red and navy blue just about the most impossible colors to photograph. I think your photos came out very well!

  83. Angelika May 21st 2008 at 07:31 pm 83

Show me a knitter that doesn’t love fee yarn. The scarf looks great, not matter if you capture the true color or not.

  84. Margaux May 21st 2008 at 07:44 pm 84

Impossible to pass up red yarn!

  85. Dana May 21st 2008 at 08:01 pm 85

looks lovely, sign me up! :)

  87. Tania May 21st 2008 at 08:10 pm 87

I don’t have any experience knitting cables but there is always first time. Brick is my mom’s favourite colour. If I win these 2 skeins I’ll knit the scarf for her to keep her warm during the cold windy winter in Bulgaria. It will not turn as good as your but I’m sure, she’ll love it anyway.

  88. Kirstie May 21st 2008 at 08:32 pm 88

I’ll almost always delurk for a contest. :) Please count me in! It’s lovely yarn, and a beautiful scarf!

  89. Suzanne May 21st 2008 at 08:39 pm 89

Lovely scarf. And just when I’m wanting to do Xmas scarves for next year.

  95. Carie May 21st 2008 at 08:52 pm 95

There is something about certain shades of red, isn’t there, that make them just too saturated regardless of how one fiddles with camera settings and backgrounds! :)

  96. Marne Rogers May 21st 2008 at 09:34 pm 96

Yes, I’d like to win the yummy brick yarn. Love the book.

  97. Marne Rogers May 21st 2008 at 09:35 pm 97

  112. Amy May 22nd 2008 at 08:33 am 112

Brick is my color! Count me in!

  113. Maria May 22nd 2008 at 08:34 am 113

Color accuracy is one of the challenges of knitting. Did you try using different background colors? Looks good still.

  114. Sara May 22nd 2008 at 09:05 am 114

You know, I wasn’t all that drawn to the scarf in the book, but your photographs are making me take a second look. it’s gorgeous.

  115. Caron Arnold May 22nd 2008 at 09:20 am 115

I’m always a sucker for a deep red colorway. beautiful.

  116. wenders May 22nd 2008 at 09:32 am 116

long-time lurker… lovely colors, knitting and photography!

  117. Kendra May 22nd 2008 at 09:40 am 117

Beautiful yarn! Please enter me in your drawing.

  118. Jennifer May 22nd 2008 at 10:00 am 118

Great way to boost your comment count- offer free yarn! I’m in!

Hope the deadlines aren’t wooshing by too fast. Take some time for yourself and your family too!

  119. alison May 22nd 2008 at 10:08 am 119

Count me in, too — I’ve heard great things about Mountain Goat but have never actually seen/touched it. The scarf is beautiful. It’s always tricky to photograph red, no?

  120. Kate May 22nd 2008 at 10:21 am 120

The Obi scarf is on my list (I LOVE the book, BTW — I’ve already used it to knit my first entirely-from-my-own-handspun sweater!), it would be very cool to use this yarn to do it!

Good luck plowing through your deadlines!

  121. nico May 22nd 2008 at 10:32 am 121

eek! what beautiful yarn! such beautiful photography, too…red is always so difficult for me to capture digitally…

  122. Luise May 22nd 2008 at 10:43 am 122

It’s easy to see why the Obi scarf caught lots of attention — phenomenal yarn with just the right pattern. And the brick’s not too shabby, if somewhat subdued. Mountain Colors yarn is so well thought out.

  123. Kate May 22nd 2008 at 11:02 am 123

I can’t seem to get a good picture of a red yarn either, but your results are (of course!) way-better than mine! Lovely scarf! :)

  124. Gina B. May 22nd 2008 at 11:08 am 124

Love the pattern. I hadn’t heard of this book yet. I think I will be ordering from Amazon soon.
Please enter me in your contest. I’ve been on a yarn diet lately because my husband lost his job.

  125. Gina B. May 22nd 2008 at 11:09 am 125

  178. sue May 23rd 2008 at 07:22 am 178

Maybe it’s the color that is difficult to photograph. Red can be a challenge.
I’ve tried Mountain Colors Weavers Wool and Bearfoot but not the Mountain Goat. Sue

  220. barb May 24th 2008 at 08:41 am 220

Beautiful scarf and yarn - would love to participate - thanks!

  221. Jeannie Crockett May 24th 2008 at 08:52 am 221

Oh, how beautiful! What a great color, too.

  222. Amanda May 24th 2008 at 09:29 am 222

I find my favorite colors to be the most difficult to photograph: reds, greens, blues. Jewel tones, I guess. I always have to do a lot of work in Photoshop to get them to look close to right on my monitor, who knows how they’re looking on others’ computers! Your reds came out nicely, definitely not dayglo!

  223. Leslie May 24th 2008 at 11:20 am 223

Adding my comment to the pile… love Mountain Colors, I used to buy it all the time when I lived in Colorado.
